15 year ago former U.S. Attorney General C. Everett Koop assembled a coalition of 20 organizations and public health officials called Shape Up America! to fight nation obesity crisis. Shape Up America! is a not-for-profit organization committed to raising awareness of obesity as a health issue and to providing responsible information on healthy weight management.

Now the coalition has launched a new crusade to provide affordable health care to formidably obese. In an open letter “15 Million Americans at Greatest Risk of Disease and Death Have Been Left Out of Health Reform Debate” they urged congress to provide counseling and treatment including weight loss surgery. The letter mentions that obesity related disease is costing the nation an estimated $147 billion each year. The coalition says that an estimated 15 million Americans need all the help they can get as the House of Representatives and the Senate begin mapping out companion bills to make health care more affordable and accessible.
