Probiotics Can Help Patients’ Weight Loss After Gastric Bypass Surgery

Probiotics can help Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery patients lose more weight — according to a study from Stanford University. Using probiotics - "good" bacteria - may solve some post-operative gastric bypass surgery patients' vitamin B-12 deficiencies.

Probiotics found in yogurt, soy milk and miso soup and supplements promote healthy digestion. Vitamin B-12 is a coenzyme that is necessary to metabolize fats and carbohydrates, and is a key component in a sturdy metabolism.

The study showed that those who took probiotic supplements had higher levels of vitamin B-12 than those who took placebos. Also, the probiotic crowd registered a 47.6 percent weight loss, compared with a 38.5 percent of the placebo patients.
