Probiotics Can Help Patients’ Weight Loss After Gastric Bypass Surgery

Probiotics can help Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery patients lose more weight — according to a study from Stanford University. Using probiotics - "good" bacteria - may solve some post-operative gastric bypass surgery patients' vitamin B-12 deficiencies.

Probiotics found in yogurt, soy milk and miso soup and supplements promote healthy digestion. Vitamin B-12 is a coenzyme that is necessary to metabolize fats and carbohydrates, and is a key component in a sturdy metabolism.

The study showed that those who took probiotic supplements had higher levels of vitamin B-12 than those who took placebos. Also, the probiotic crowd registered a 47.6 percent weight loss, compared with a 38.5 percent of the placebo patients.

Affordable Health Care To The Formidably Obese is Urged to Congress

Shape Up America! coalition is persuading Congress to provide affordable health care to the formidably obese...

15 year ago former U.S. Attorney General C. Everett Koop assembled a coalition of 20 organizations and public health officials called Shape Up America! to fight nation obesity crisis. Shape Up America! is a not-for-profit organization committed to raising awareness of obesity as a health issue and to providing responsible information on healthy weight management.

Now the coalition has launched a new crusade to provide affordable health care to formidably obese. In an open letter “15 Million Americans at Greatest Risk of Disease and Death Have Been Left Out of Health Reform Debate” they urged congress to provide counseling and treatment including weight loss surgery. The letter mentions that obesity related disease is costing the nation an estimated $147 billion each year. The coalition says that an estimated 15 million Americans need all the help they can get as the House of Representatives and the Senate begin mapping out companion bills to make health care more affordable and accessible.

Study: Weight Loss Surgery Cuts Cancer Risk in Women

Weight-loss surgery can sometimes reverse type 2 diabetes and ease other obesity-related diseases and conditions. Obesity is a known risk factor for colon, breast, endometrial, kidney and esophageal cancers. New research suggests that obese women who undergo bariatric weight-loss surgery experience a 42 percent drop in their cancer risk - Men, for some reason, didn't get the same benefit from the surgery.

The majority of participants in the study had Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (commonly known as stomach stapling); some had adjustable gastric banding, in which a silicone band is placed around the top of the upper part of the stomach to restrict food intake. Fewer than 300 people in the study had gastric bypass surgery, a more dramatic technique in which the surgeon creates a golf-ball-shaped pouch to curb food intake. Although a reduction in cancer risk was seen with all three techniques, some experts believe that gastric bypass surgery may one day be shown to be more effective than the other two.

Obesity increases the risk of cancer and more aggressive screening is needed for obese people. Obesity International Solutions provides safe and affordable weight-loss surgery procedures in Mexico. Contact us for FREE Consultation.
